Evaluating the Influence of Research Funding (Grants) on Academic Performance: The Case of the University of Isfahan

Background and Purpose: Research grants function as a financial mechanism that supports scientific activities and contributes to the enhancement of university performance indicators. This study investigates the relationship between research funding and both the quantity and quality of scientific outputs at the University of Isfahan. Specifically, it examines the extent to which research grants influence publication volume, the degree of scientific collaboration, and citation impact.
Methodology: This study adopts a quantitative descriptive-analytical design and employs a documentary method for data collection. The research population comprises all Scopus-indexed publications affiliated with the University of Isfahan, published between 1971 and 2024. The initial dataset consisted of 14,815 records. Following the removal of duplicates and data cleaning procedures, the final dataset included 13,046 unique publications. Data processing was conducted using SPSS version 26. Due to the non-normal distribution of the variables, the study applied Spearman’s nonparametric test to calculate correlations. The analysis specifically examined the relationships among publication volume, authorship participation, and citation counts.
Findings: The scientific output of the University of Isfahan exhibits a clear upward trajectory from 1971 to 2024, marked by notable changes in publication volume, the structure of scientific collaboration, and citation impact. Over the entire period, Scopus indexed a total of 13,046 publications affiliated with the university. Of these, 9,031 received no research funding, while 4,015 were supported by research grants. In the early years, the university produced very few publications; however, scientific output accelerated markedly after the 2010s. The period from 2022 to 2024 represents the peak of productivity, with 2,796 publications. Although unfunded publications continue to account for the larger share of output, funded publications demonstrate a substantially faster growth rate. Specifically, the number of funded publications rose from a single article in the earliest years to 1,066 publications between 2022 and 2024, representing approximately 38 percent of the university’s total output during this period. The pattern of authorship participation exhibits a similar temporal trajectory. Over the study period, a total of 54,184 authorship contributions were documented. The number of contributions rose sharply from 12 between 1971 and 1973 to 17,550 between 2022 and 2024. In the early years, most contributions were associated with unfunded publications; however, the expansion of research funding gradually shifted this distribution toward funded publications. Of the total contributions, 22,338 were linked to funded publications, while 31,846 corresponded to unfunded ones. The highest level of participation was observed in the 2022–2024 period, during which 1,066 funded publications accounted for 10,165 authorship contributions, yielding an average of 9.54 authors per article. In contrast, unfunded publications in the same period recorded 7,385 contributions, with an average of 4.27 authors per article. This disparity suggests that research grants facilitate the formation of larger research teams and more extensive collaboration networks. A notable illustration is a funded article published in 2024, which involved 976 co-authors. Citation analysis further corroborates the growth of the university’s scholarly impact. The published works have accumulated a total of 208,705 citations, with an average citation rate of 15.99 per article. The number of citations exhibited a marked increase from just 25 between 1971 and 1973 to a peak of 43,742 between 2016 and 2018—the highest citation level recorded in the dataset. In the most recent period (2022–2024), publications garnered 16,613 citations, a difference that can be attributed to the shorter time window available for citation accrual. Notably, unfunded publications accounted for a greater total number of citations (134,451); however, funded publications have demonstrated higher average citation rates in recent years. Specifically, during 2022–2024, funded publications received an average of 10.51 citations per article, compared to 6.55 citations per article for unfunded publicationsCorrelation analysis reveals strong positive relationships among the principal variables. Specifically, the correlation between the number of publications and authorship participation is 0.990, while the correlation between authorship participation and citation counts is 0.859. These findings indicate that higher levels of scientific collaboration are associated with increased research productivity and greater citation impact.
Discussion and conclusion: The findings suggest that funded publications enhance scientific output, broaden research collaboration, and elevate citation impact at the University of Isfahan. Concurrently, the persistent increase in non-funded publications underscores a high level of researcher motivation and demonstrates the university’s capacity to sustain independent scholarly activity. Accordingly, financial policies should integrate institutional funding with individual research initiatives to foster collaboration, improve research visibility, and support long-term academic development.
Originality: This study presents the first national-level analysis of the impact of research funding on the scientific performance of an Iranian university, utilizing Scopus-indexed data spanning over five decades. By integrating data-driven scientometric methods with a research policy perspective, the study offers empirical evidence to inform university decision-making and support the evaluation of research funding policies in Iran.
