Impact of Information Literacy Skills on the University of Birjand Students' Self-efficacy

Abstract

Purpose: The study aimed at examining the impact of the information literacy skills of Birjand University's students on their self-efficacy.

Methodology: Data gathering tool was a questionnaire containing 51 items divided into 3 parts. The population included the undergraduate and postgraduate students who were studying in the University of Birjand in 2013. Among all of 3635 students, a sample of 350 ones were selected by stratified sampling method.

Findings: There was a strong and positive relationship among the students' levels of information literacy skills and their self-efficacy. A significant relationship was observed between their ability of locating and self-efficacy. The dimension of information access from information literacy aspects had an impact on their self-efficacy. The aspect of the students' successful experience of information search impacted their self-efficacy. The dimension of information evaluation of information literacy impacted their self-efficacy. There were significant differences between the women and men's self-efficacy, the undergraduate and postgraduate students' self-efficacy. The Humanity area students' self-efficacy was higher than the others, among all educational areas. There was a significant relationship among the students' information literacy skills with their self-efficacy acquaintance. The dimensions of information locating and information evaluation had respectively the most impact on the students’ self-efficacy aspects, and the students’ information use had the least impact on it.

Originality: To give importance to the students' information literacy during educational period, the results of the research may be used by the librarian and faculty members.
