Use and Relevance Judgment of elements (Title, Abstract, Keywords and fulltext) in document selection and evaluation: An approach based on Riding’s cognitive style analysis

Abstract

Purpose: This study aimed to investigate the impact of cognitive style on document relevance judgment in document selection and evaluation process.

Method: This is an applied research conducted through a survey method. Humanities & social Science – Pure and engineering science Students of Ferdowsi University of Mashhad, Iran, were selected as samples for Riding’s cognitive style analysis in order to distinguish two cognitive style groups (Holistic and Analytic).
Findings: The results of the research demonstrated that there were significant differences between the two cognitive style's grading of relevance judgment across the six simulated work tasks. Furthermore, although there was no significant difference between Humanities & social Science – Basic & engineering science samples in using document elements, Holistic mostly used fulltext, while analytic ones used titles and abstracts intheir relevance judgment. It is expected that the results of the study can help search engine and web designers enhance a user-personalized interface in order to support interactive information retrieval systems.
