Abstract

Purpose: The main object of this research is to survey the status of book publishing in Iran between the years of 1979 to 2008.
Methodology: Documentary and descriptive and analytical method are used to analyze the status of publication in Iran. All published books during the years of 1979 to 2008 were formed the research group of this study. Check list is used to collect data. Also statistical methods like percentage, mean, standard deviation and figures are used to describe data.. In addition pearson correlation coefficient was used to examine the hypotheses.
Findings: Totally, 560339 books published during the studied period. The rate of publication increased from 1863 in 1979 to 56893 in 2008. At all 23 percent of publications were translated books and the rest were written books. Also 51 percent of publications were in first edition. In addition approximately 77 percent of books were published in Tehran and the rest were published in other provinces. Moreover the number of publishers increased approximately 10 percent each year.
Results: Totally, all the publication items were in progress during the studied period- except in some years. In fact religious books and Computer science, information and general works were respectively the highest and lowest in number. Consequently the first hypothesis, "there is a meaningful relationship between the average of books price and books supply (total circulation)", and the second hypothesis "there is a meaningful relationship between the number of active publishers and yearly supply of books (total circulation)" were approved with 99 percent confidence.
