The participation of the faculty members of Ferdowsi University of Mashhad in scientific production from 2000 to 2010

Abstract

Purpose: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the scientific output of the faculty members of Ferdowsi University of Mashhad (FUM) on the Web of Science (WoS) in an 11-years period from 2000 to 2010 at national and international levels.
Method: The population of this research consisted of scientific productions by the faculty members of Ferdowsi University of Mashhad indexed in the Web of Science in four areas of agriculture, basic sciences, engineering, and humanities (2038 documents) during 2000-2010. In this study, sampling was not carried out and all the products by the faculty members were analyzed. 
Findings: The results showed that FUM faculty members published around 1898 documents in different formats from. The results also showed that, among others, the faculty members of basic sciences, and especially of chemistry, were very active in publishing and citing papers. The growth rate of production at FUM was good and the most productions were done in 2010. The most level of collaboration of FUM faculty members was in basic science, engineering, and agriculture areas respectively. It was also found that variables such as place of graduation, and gender of faculty members had no impact on the scientific productions by them, but there was a significant difference between the faculty members' scientific position and their scientific outputs. In general, FUM faculty members' scientific productions in the Web of Science database were not acceptable.
Discussion: Albeit the trend of scientific production of FUM in the investigated period was growing, but it was not the same in all of areas. So the authorities of FUM have to provide the conditions for the faculty members to have more stimulant and vigor to publish papers at international level, to improve the status of FUM.
