Abstract

INTRUDUCTION: Evidence shows that the current state of parenting and formal education could not absorb a huge group of children and adolescents in their textbooks or non-textbooks. This study was conducted to evaluate the effectiveness of developmental bibliotherapy on reading motivation dimensions among third-grade girl students of Yazd city, Iran. Developmental bibliotherapy occurs in the classroom environment in which teacher tries to teach positive behavior dealing with the challenges of daily life.

METHODOLOGY: The study was a quasi-experimental study (pretest-posttest with a control group). The study population included all third grade Yazd female students in the academic year of 2016-2017. The sample group included 40 students were selected through multistage cluster sampling method. Selected two schools have classes with third-grade students where students in one was assigned as the experimental and ones in the other as control group, randomly. To measure the dependent variables, reading motivation questionnaire (MRQ) made by Wigfiel & Guthrie was used. T-test was used to test the hypotheses.

FINDINGS: The results showed that the developmental bibliotherapy has a positive impact on reading motivation dimensions, including reading curiosity, reading involvement and social reasons for reading. But the research hypothesis about increasing reading motivation because of the importance of reading was not confirmed.

CONCLUSIONS:The pleasure that children experience in the process of developmental bibliotherapy increases their reading motivation because of the autonomy and freedom to express their emotions and also during the enjoyable activity that occurs after reading a book.
