Abstract

Introduction: The aim of this study is to introduce and survey the BIBFRAME model as the alternative for MARC for bibliographic description of the library resources and its applications in the linked data environment.
Methodology: The study is a analytical literature review for documentation and analyzing the components and features of the BIBFRAME model.
Findings: A major focus of the BIBFRAME model will be to determine a transition path for the MARC formats while preserving a robust data exchange that has supported resource sharing and cataloging cost savings in recent decades. The basic purpose of this model has been the replacement of the MARC, but it focuses more on the expression and communication of the bibliographic data rather than creating and organizing data.
Conclusion: The development of the BIBFRAME model is a response to the impact of online networked information, implementing search engines, need to regulating and finding library collections and standardization of bibliographic data for connecting to the linked data environment. The model has potential for solving many web-related library problems such as precise search, authority control, classification, data portability and demystification.
